the one for Hanging up and Hanging Out

Have you ever heard the term…hang up and hang out? This is something I constantly find myself saying. Whether it be to my friends when we’re sitting around playing cards or to my husband when we’re sitting in the living room watching tv or laying in bed at the end of the night.

I enjoy spending quality time with people. Putting away the screens, and just enjoying each other’s company. Laughing at each other, talking about how our week was, yelling “UNO” after you’ve spent the entire game with half the deck in your hand. What can I say? I’m old fashioned when it comes to quality time.

I got to thinking though, how often do we do that when talking to God. How often do we sit down in bed and read the bible – no distractions? Do we turn the TV off, put our phone down, unplug and truly listen to what his word has to say? Even at church, we can get easily distracted – looking around the room, glancing at the clock, making silly faces at the baby two rows up. I’m thinking about this and I begin to feel a twinge of guilt bubbling inside of me.

Why do we think we can ask our friends to do this for us – but we don’t feel the need to extend the same courtesy to our Lord and Savior, the Maker of the Mountains, our Father?

Lord, help us practice unplugging and putting our focus on you. Let us remember that you’ve given the ultimate sacrifice for us, and that the least we can do is devote a small portion of our day to you, and only you.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
